Frequently Asked Questions
What is Hindsight Mode?
Hindsight Mode is the active microphone session. It begins only after you choose START and complete the in-app acknowledgement.
While it is active, Hindsight runs as an Android foreground service and provides an ongoing system notification. Android also displays its microphone privacy indicator on supported versions.
Will Hindsight Mode affect battery life?
Hindsight uses the microphone while Hindsight Mode is active, so it will use some battery.
The app is designed to be lightweight, but battery use depends on your phone, session length, audio source, Android settings, battery optimisation, and other apps running at the same time.
Does my audio leave my phone?
Hindsight does not upload your rolling buffer or saved clips to our servers.
Saved clips stay on your phone until you delete them. Audio leaves your phone only when you choose to share a saved clip through Android’s share menu, at which point the app or service you select handles that file.
Subscription information is communicated to Google Play and RevenueCat to purchase, restore, and verify UnBound access. These services do not receive your audio from Hindsight.
What happens when I turn my phone off?
Restarting your phone clears the temporary rolling buffer. Force-stopping the app also clears it.
Saved clips already written to your device remain there until you delete them.
Does Hindsight start automatically after a restart?
No. You must choose START and complete the acknowledgement before a new Hindsight Mode session begins.
Can I record conversations with Hindsight?
Recording laws vary by location and situation. In some places, you may need consent from everyone being recorded.
You are responsible for ensuring your use complies with applicable recording, privacy, workplace, and consent laws. Hindsight is a tool, not legal advice.
Why do I acknowledge each session?
Hindsight is designed for clear, deliberate use. Before the microphone session starts, the app asks you to acknowledge that Hindsight Mode will use the microphone and keep a temporary rolling buffer on your device.
Does turning off voice commands stop the microphone session?
No. Turning off voice-command detection only disables the “Hindsight Capture” shortcut.
To stop microphone use and clear the temporary buffer, use STOP.
What does “Everything” mean after Hindsight Capture?
“Everything” means all audio currently available in the rolling buffer, up to your plan limit:
- Tethered: up to 12 minutes per saved clip.
- UnBound: up to the full 95-minute buffer.
What is Range Mode?
Range Mode is an UnBound feature that lets you choose the exact start and end of a saved clip within the available rolling buffer.
How do I restore UnBound?
Use the restore-purchases option in the app while signed in to the Google Play account used for the subscription. Hindsight uses Google Play and RevenueCat to check and restore subscription access, so an internet connection may be required.
If restoration does not work, contact support and include your app version and the Google Play account context without sending passwords or payment-card details.
